This research guide was created in 2017 by Marissa Clifford, Anja Foerschner, Kayleigh Perkov, and John Tain. In 2023, Beatriz Garcia-Diaz significantly expanded the scope. In 2025, the Expanding the Study of Performance in Women Artists' Archives project team revised and expanded the current iteration.
This section of the guide is intended to serve as an introduction to research on feminist art, feminist art history, and feminist performance. It is based, though not exclusively, on the Getty Library's significant holdings of books that support the study of feminist art and performance. The second section shares thematic bibliographies related to research completed by the Expanding the Study of Performance in Women Artist Archives research project.
In addition to offering a framework through which to begin research and curriculum development, the bibliographies also offer points of entry to consider debates and critiques of feminist art and feminist art history that intersect with and contextualize related fields and discourses. The bibliographies contain sources that address interventions and critiques—often related to the lack of inclusion of considerations of race, class, and sexuality—into the fields of feminist art and feminist art history.
While the Getty Research Institute’s holdings extend beyond the 20th century, a significant portion of its feminist art-related holdings stem from the late 20th century. This parallels the rise of the second-wave feminist movement, the proliferation of feminist art, and the development of feminist art history, not to mention major shifts in feminist theory.
